Funeral held for state rep. Dr. Yvonne Kennedy

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) — On Saturday, Mobile said goodbye to State Representative Dr. Yvonne Kennedy.

Dr. Kennedy died on Dec. 8 after a brief illness. She was 67 years old.

The procession filed into the Mobile Convention Center amid music and prayers.

Dr. Kennedy's casket was topped by red roses and lilies, and the service was shown on two large screens. Bishop Teresa Snorton, Presiding Bishop, Fifth Episcopal District, CME Church, gave the invocation.

She said, "We thank you Lord for the life of this woman who was truly your daughter."

Among the speakers offering tributes were Mobile Mayor Sam Jones, and Alabama Governor Robert Bentley.

Mayor Jones said of Dr. Kennedy, "She has provided the service that the Lord blessed us to provide, and we have been blessed with her being here.  And, I believe the Master has already said, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant, well done.' "

Governor Bentley said, "We're children of God, and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be. But, we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him for we shall see Him as He is."

Former U.S Labor Secretary Alexis Herman reminded the people here of Dr. Kennedy's work in expanding Mardi Gras parades to new neighborhoods.

Kennedy was also a former President of Bishop State Community College.

Herman said, "Carry on, Yvonne, carry on. May you continue to walk with God. From this day on, carry on."

A private burial was held after the funeral. A wake and worship service were held on Thursday and an educational tribute on Friday.
